Turns out, Montanans undaunted with journo ‘kerfuffle’; Gianforte apologies in VICTORY speech anyway

The Republican Party held onto Montana’s sole U.S. House seat in a special election Thursday, after GOP candidate Greg Gianforte was charged with misdemeanor assault of a reporter the night before.

This seemed to confirm that voters in “Big Sky Country” were more concerned with politics than they were with his inappropriate rough-and-tumble behavior.

Gianforte had a comfortable win of just over 6 points, 50.2% to 44.1. He used the occasion of his victory speech Thursday night to apologize for his actions, stating that it was what the people of Montana do.

“When you make a mistake, you have to own up to it. That’s the Montana way,” he told his supporters.

“Last night I made a mistake, and I took an action that I can’t take back, and I’m not proud of what happened. I should not have responded in the way that I did, and for that I’m sorry. I should not have treated that reporter that way, and for that I am sorry Mr. Ben Jacobs.”

“That’s not the person that I am. And that’s not the way I’ll lead in this state.”

Jacobs was the reporter Gianforte allegedly body-slammed to the floor.

Shaun Scott, a computer science professor at Helena’s Carroll College said the assault charge was barely made it onto his radar screen in his voting decision, Fox News reported.

“If you have somebody sticking a phone in your face, a mic in your face, over and over, and you don’t know how to deal with the situation, you haven’t really done that, you haven’t dealt with that, I can see where it can … make you a little angry,” Scott said Thursday

Another factor helping the candidate was that approximately one-third of Montana’s voters had already cast their decision before the altercation.

Here’s Gianforte’s full victory speech.

Others seemed to agree with Professor Scott — the scuffle with the reporter didn’t matter at all.
