Nancy Pelosi: The Dalai Lama ‘prayed for me that I would rid myself of my negative attitude’

Not sure if prayer alone can help Nancy Pelosi.

The Democratic House Minority Leader was part of a bipartisan group from the U.S. House of Representatives which visited with Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama on Wednesday, The Associated Press reported.

Meeting at his temple in Dharmsala, India, Pelosi told him and the gathered Tibetans that they would “not be silenced” in the face of oppression by China, which rules Tibet.

The California lawmaker stopped short of addressing the “brutal tactics of the Chinese government” at one point in her speech because, she said, the Dalai Lama had prayed for her “negative attitude.”

“I won’t go into them because His Holiness prayed for me that I would rid myself of my negative attitude about dwelling on the negative too much,” Pelosi said in her often odd speech that sometimes had her stumbling over her words.

“What we see here today in support of the Tibetan people, we have said, what we say here, we have said to the top leadership in … the Chinese government,” she said, before even bringing up actor Richard Gere, who is a Buddhist and supports the Dalai Lama.

“We recognize that China weighs heavily on any country, any corporation, any person – and Richard Gere can attest to that – who speaks out for the Tibetan people,” Pelosi said to the gathered crowd.

Beijing is not likely to be too happy about the visit by the U.S. lawmakers, which comes a few weeks after President Trump hosted Chinese President Xi Jinping at his Florida resort.

China views the Dalai Lama as a dangerous separatist and claims the Himalayan region has been part of its country for more than seven centuries despite Tibet’s insistence that it has been independent most of that time, according to AP.

“You will not be silenced,” she promised the Tibetans. “The brutal tactics of the Chinese government to erase race, culture and language of Tibetan people challenges the conscience of the world. We will meet that challenge.”

Twitter users weighed in on Pelosi’s trip and the special prayer bestowed upon the politician who claims to be a devout Catholic.
