Instead of making Mexico pay for it, Sen. Ted Cruz has proposed using El Chapo’s seized funds to pay for the border wall.
Cruz brought forward the bill — Ensuring Lawful Collection of Hidden Assets to Provide Order, or ELCHAPO — on Tuesday that will seek to redirect the $14 billion in assets that were seized from El Chapo in order to pay for Trump’s border wall.

“Fourteen billion dollars will go a long way toward building a wall that will keep Americans safe and hinder the illegal flow of drugs, weapons, and individuals across our southern border,” Cruz said. “Ensuring the safety and security of Texans is one of my top priorities. We must also be mindful of the impact on the federal budget.”
Cruz’s bill argues that repurposing the criminally forfeited assets from El Chapo and other Mexican cartels would “offset the wall’s cost and make meaningful progress toward achieving President Trump’s stated border security objectives.”
“The U.S. Government is currently seeking the criminal forfeiture of more than $14 billion in drug proceeds and illicit profits from El Chapo, the former leader of the Sinaloa drug cartel who was recently extradited to the U.S. to face criminal prosecution for numerous alleged drug-related crimes, including conspiracy to commit murder and money laundering,” Cruz added.
Cruz’s proposal comes just three months after the Mexican government extradited El Chapo back to the United States following months of drawn out court battles in Mexico and several successful escapes from prison.
Cruz received support from the bill as some notable names applauded his idea.

As some have pointed out, El Chapo escaped through a tunnel. So how effective would a wall be?
But he scaped thru a tunnel, so…

The United States and Mexico agreed that El Chapo will not that face the death penalty for his many crimes, including a murder charge against the drug lord for killing a U.S. citizen and two family relatives.
Donald Trump has made it very clear that we will have a border wall between Mexico and the United States. Trump still insists that Mexico will be paying for the wall, which is estimated to cost around $22 billion according to an internal Homeland Security report from February.
Trump has recently pulled back on his assertiveness that Mexico will pay for the wall, tweeting on Sunday that Mexico will pay for it “in some form” at a later date.
While there are many opinions about Trump’s proposal to erect a border wall, Cruz’s bill would fulfill two of the president’s most popular campaign promises: building the wall and making Mexico pay for it.
