They were huge shoes to fill, but so far Fox News host Tucker Carlson is stepping in the right direction.
If anyone was concerned about whether or not viewers would stick with Carlson after the abrupt cancellation of Bill O’Reilly’s long-running The O’Reilly Factor, early indications are certainly positive.

According to Variety, early Nielsen stats showed Tucker Carlson Tonight drawing 3.2 million total viewers on its first night, 636,000 of whom are in the key 25-54 demographic advertisers love. This was enough for first place among cable news shows.
While Carlson’s ratings were down 11 percent from O’Reilly’s last night on the air, when the former host drew 3.6 million viewers, they were within striking distance and were actually up slightly from O’Reilly’s numbers in the key 25-54 demographic.
The new show also handily beat its rivals. CNN’s Anderson Cooper 360 drew 1 million viewers and MSNBC’s All in with Chris Hayes drew 1.5 million.
In another positive for Fox News, The Five finished second only to Tucker Carlson Tonight with 2.8 million total viewers and 568,000 in the key advertising demographic, beating CNN’s The Lead With Jake Tapper as well as MSNBC’s The Rachel Maddow Show, which has seen its own ratings surge of late.
Carlson’s show began with a moving tribute to O’Reilly, then included a much-anticipated interview with Caitlyn Jenner as well as frequent Carlson guest, the always entertaining Mike Rowe.
