First daughter Ivanka Trump kept it classy Tuesday at the Women’s 20 Summit in Berlin when she was booed and jeered after mentioning her father, President Donald Trump.
The visit began with what the media characterized as a “warm handshake” with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who was also in attendance, but took on a more negative tone when Trump suggested her father was a “tremendous champion of supporting families and enabling them to thrive.”
It is difficult to hear the audience in the clip below, but it captures Trump’s remarks when the moderator interrupted to ask her to respond to the hissing:
The audience reaction is better captured in the video clip below:

In a very straightforward manner that some took as condescending, Merkel asked Trump about her role as first daughter.
‘The German audience is not that familiar with the concept of a first daughter,” Merckel began. “I’d like to ask you, what is your role, and who are you representing, your father as president of the United States, the American people, or your business?”
“Certainly not the latter,” Trump replied, before adding that her goal was enacting “incremental positive change.” She also said “empowering women in the workplace” was important to her, and took the opportunity to defend her father’s treatment of women.
“I know from personal experience … I think the thousands of women who have worked with and for my father for decades when he was in the private sector are a testament to his belief and conviction in the potential of women.”
“He encouraged me and enabled me to thrive,” Ivanka explained. “I grew up in a house where there was no barrier to what I could accomplish beyond my own perseverance and my own tenacity… There was no difference for me and my brothers.”

The reaction on social media was a mixed bag of support for Ivanka Trump and criticism of her father.
Here’s a sampling of responses from Twitter:
The Germans are booing Ivanka. Take that in. https://t.co/aQU186biK9

No soft-balling for Ivanka Trump at #w20 panel. Straight off she's asked if she represents the American people, her father or her business

Ivanka says she’s “certainly not” here to represent her business, though still figuring out her role #w20germany

Those who want Ivanka Trump’s role “clarified” had no problem about the shadowy role played by Obama “advisor” Valerie Jarrett.

@larryelder Well Larry, Ivanka wasn’t born in Iran, and no ties to the Muslim Brotherhood.

Journalists are defending Ivanka from being booed more than they did when Hillary Clinton was subjected to assassination “jokes.”
