Florida senior turns heads wearing BLM activist prom dress that features a familiar face

A Florida high school senior is turning heads with her prom dress, not because it is skimpy, or stylish, but because it is festooned with photos of African-Americans who are celebrated by the Black Lives Matter movement for being killed in connection with police actions.

17-year-old student Milan Morris of Cardinal Newman High School in West Palm Beach, Florida, wore the dress emblazoned with photos of Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown, Sandra Bland, and several others to “convey a message” about police brutality, the Orlando Sun-Sentinel reported.

On the front of the dress is a very large closeup image of Trayvon Martin’s face. Martin was the African-American teen killed in 2012 in Florida after attacking Hispanic man, George Zimmerman. The rest of the dress features smaller images of a host of black people killed in police custody or in altercations with police.

“It really conveyed such a strong message,” Morris told the paper. “For me to be in that moment, to be bold and courageous to do that, it was a blessing.”

The activist dress was created by Terrence Torrence, a designer from Palm Beach County, who said he was inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement and the album by pop singer Solange Knowles entitled, “A Seat at the Table.”

“This year I was like, I really wanted to put the dress out there,” Torrence said. He added that the student was very interested in the idea and was proud to wear the dress.

“It was for the youth. She was perfect for it.” Torrence said.

Student Morris is a popular member of the school’s girl’s basketball team and has already been accepted to Boston College to study pre-med and play basketball for next year’s semester. Recently the Sun Sentinel named Morris the Palm Beach County girls basketball player of the year.

“She graduates from Cardinal Newman as the school’s all-time points leader, with 2,025. She also hit a single-season 81 three-pointers in her senior year, a school record. Her 258 career three-pointers is also a school record,” the paper noted.
