Former NFL star Aaron Hernandez found dead in jail cell

Former New England Patriots star Aaron Hernandez was found dead in his prison cell days after being acquitted on double murder charges.

The 27-year-old former tight end was found hanging from a bed sheet in what the Massachusetts Department of Corrections have called a suicide, CNN reported.

“Lifesaving techniques were attempted on Mr. Hernandez, and he was transported to UMass Leominster, where he was pronounced dead at 4:07 a.m.,” the department said in a statement.

Hernandez was still serving a life sentence for the murder of his friend Odin Lloyd in 2013.

Hernandez was discovered Wednesday morning in his cell after he “attempted to block his door from the inside by jamming the door with various items,” presumably so he couldn’t be rescued.

He was staying in a single cell in general population, according to the statement.
