Sean Spicer joins United Air in public hot box; Pelosi and Streisand call for his head

United’s CEO should seriously consider thanking White House press secretary Sean Spicer for making a gaffe so enormous at Tuesday’s press briefing that it pulled the public’s attention off of the horrific PR jam the airline landed in this weekend.

Spicer tried to argue that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad was even worse that Adolph Hitler in one respect, but it didn’t come out the way he had intended.

People immediately took to social media to call for his head — or at least his resignation.

Everyone saw Spicer’s inartfully phrased comment as a denial of the Holocaust, beginning with singer/actress Barbra Streisand.

Gaffe-prone House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi observed that Spicer’s own gaffe occurred on Passover, and the California Democrat also called for him to be fired. Washington Post congressional journalist Ed O’Keefe reported:

Pelosi didn’t just rely on media outlets to get her message out — she also took to Twitter to call for Spicer’s head.

Former first daughter Chelsea Clinton stopped short of calling for his firing but suggested that Spicer do something to make him more sensitive to the World War II Holocaust victims.

When Spicer immediately walked back his statement, several journalists — including Politico digital editor Zack Stanton, The Daily Beast’s Andrew Kirell and CNN’s Brian Stelter — thought he’d only dug himself into a bigger hole.

Singer/guitarist and Airborne Toxic Event frontman Mikel Jollett compared Spicer’s gaffe to United Airlines monumental PR fumble.

Even a parody account of the press secretary — Sean Spicier — which normally criticizes the administration’s critics, lampooned Spicer’s gaffe.

Spicer attempted to smooth the waters later that evening — but made it worse yet again. He told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer that the president is attempting to “destabilize” the Middle East. Oops!

Some days are like that — you just can’t do anything right. Give it a week and it’ll settle down.
