In the first post-Trump test, Republican defeats Dem in Kansas special election

It was a victory for Trump as much as it was a victory for The Republican candidate.

President Donald Trump passed the first test of his ability to hold a Republican majority in Congress Tuesday night when the GOP held off a strong challenger in a special election.

Kansas state Treasurer Ron Estes defeated Democratic civil rights attorney James Thompson to take the seat vacated by former Rep. Mike Pompeo when he took over the reins of the Central Intelligence Agency.

Estes secured 53 percent of the vote to give him an 8,000 vote margin of victory over Thompson, who received 46 percent in the Democrat’s stronger-than-expected challenge, according to Fox News.

Estes claimed that the close election was proof that no Republican seat is safe, and vowed to campaign to retain his seat in 2018.

The importance of the election was demonstrated by the national GOP figures who campaigned for Estes. President Donald Trump recorded a get-out-the-vote message that was robo-called Monday to Republicans, and he tweeted his support early Tuesday.

Other nationally known Republicans pitched in over the final days of the race. Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas campaigned for Estes Monday in Wichita, while Vice President Mike Pence also recorded a get-out-the-vote call. The National Republican Congressional Committee spent roughly $90,000 in last-minute TV and digital ads.

 

Those efforts ended up being a big help to rally Republicans in a special election that normally doesn’t attract many voters. Included among them was Belle Plaine homemaker Charlene Health, 52, who cast her vote for Estes.

“I wasn’t even going to vote,” she said as she left her polling site according to Fox News “I finally did. I realized this was important.”

The election even drew Democrats who threw in with Trump last November, such as retired construction worker Alan Branum, 64.

“I don’t think it is fair people condemn him,” he said of the president. “He hasn’t been in long enough to make a judgment. People need to give him some time

He said he plans to eventually change his party affiliation to Republican.

After the victory, the president offered his congratulations.

Trump supporters were relieved 00 and pleased.
