Ann Coulter is scheduled to speak at the University of California, Berkeley, in April, nearly three months following the riots that cancelled Milo Yiannopoulos’s talk.
Berkeley College Republicans and BridgeCal will bring the conservative author to campus to discuss illegal immigration, reports The Daily Californian. The speech has been planned as a response to a separate illegal immigration speaker series organized by BridgeCal.
“[The Berkeley College Republicans and Bridge Cal] could bring someone better than Ann Coulter,” said Caiden Nason, membership vice president for the Berkeley Democrats, in an email obtained by The Daily Californian. “Her claims have been disproven over and over again, and she’s just another conservative sensationalist. … I think this just contributes to the idea that BCR is more interested in headlines than anything else.”
Coulter’s address will include a lengthy question and answer session.
“We are very optimistic in that we believe that the facilitation of discourse between Ann Coulter and the students is going to happen,” BridgeCal co-president Pranav Jandhyala told The Daily Californian. “Students will be able to challenge Ann Coulter and what she believes.”
Maria Echaveste, UC Berkeley Law lecturer and former adviser to President Bill Clinton, will serve as the liberal counterpart to Coulter, according to Jandhyala.
Naweed Tahmas, a spokesman for the Berkeley College Republicans, praised the choice of Coulter. “There’s definitely a void in conservative thought at UC Berkeley,” he told The Daily Californian.
Coulter is tentatively scheduled to speak Thursday, April 27. Her talk comes nearly three months following the riots that prevented Milo Yiannopoulos from speaking. During those riots in February, masked members of Antifa and others broke windows, chucked smoke bombs, and started a fire outside the building in which Yiannopoulos was scheduled to speak.
