The Democratic National Committee is swinging an ax to chop off dead weight. This week, DNC chairman Tom Perez asked all staffers to submit resignation letters by April 15.
A transition committee assembled by Perez will then recommend which staffers the DNC will keep as part of a massive reorganization.
The move is part of an effort to rebuild the beleaguered party after losing the White House and both houses of Congress in the 2016 elections, the Hill reported.
In a statement, Perez’s rep Xochitl Hinojosa said asking for mass resignations is normal during a leadership transition, even though Democrats whined and moaned when Donald Trump did something similar as part of his presidential transition.
“This is longstanding precedent at the DNC and has happened during multiple Chair transitions,” Hinojosa said. “From the beginning, Tom has been adamant that we structure the DNC for future campaigns.”
The DNC came under fire after leaked emails showed that interim chair Donna Brazile helped her pal Hillary Clinton cheat during the primaries by giving her the debate questions in advance.
The DNC also faced heavy criticism when internal emails revealed that former chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz had tried to rig the primaries in Clinton’s favor. Wikileaks dumps also showed that Clinton’s camp had colluded with the mainstream media to ensure positive news coverage.
All these scandals have taken their toll on the flailing party, which many believe has alienated working-class voters and has become too radical by moving too far to the left.
Meanwhile, President Trump isn’t worried about the Democrats. In February, he trolled new chair Tom Perez. “I could not be happier for him, or for the Republican Party,” Trump tweeted gleefully.
