A Philadelphia accountant who was allegedly refused service at a New York City bar for wearing a red “Make America Great Again” hat is suing the establishment, the New York Post reports.
30-year-old Greg Piatek told the Post that he and two friends were visiting the 9/11 memorial on January 28, the week after Trump’s inauguration, and stopped for drinks at The Happiest Hour in New York City’s West Village.
A female bartender served Piatek a jalapeño margarita at first, but after he ordered round two another bartender noticed his hat and summarily skipped he and his friends. After one of his friends asked the male bartender about being skipped, the bartender asked Piatek if his hat was “a joke,” according to court documents.
At that point, Piatek told the Post that things “clicked” for him, because it was then, when he turned his back to the bar, that the bartenders saw his hat. “Ignoring me because I’m wearing the hat is ridiculous,” Piatek told the Post. “It’s really sad.”
Piatek ended up getting his second drink with a dose of attitude as it was “slammed” down.
Then Piatek claims a third bartender, whom he hadn’t even ordered a drink from, asked if his hat was a “joke” and told Piatek that he couldn’t believe he would “support someone so terrible and you must be as terrible a person!”
At that point Piatek spoke to the manager and, according to the lawsuit, was told that “Anyone who supports Trump — or believes what you believe — is not welcome here! And you need to leave right now because we won’t serve you!” He was then shown the door.
According to the Post, owner Jon Neidich has not responded to their inquiries and a bar manager refused comment.
