National sorority proudly announces it’s accepting men who self-ID as women. What could go wrong?

It was only a matter of time.

In an apparent move to be first and also prove to the world that they’re more politically correct than the rest, a national sorority announced that it will now accept men who self-identify as women into its ranks.

The move also brought the term “diversity” to ever greater heights — at least for a sorority.

A smattering of individual sorority and fraternity chapters have allowed members who identify as their sexual opposites to join, however, Alpha Chi Omega is the first to make this policy change for all its chapters, in its case numbering 193 nationwide, the Minnesota Daily reported.

The policy change was announced last month by Angela Costley Harris, the sorority’s national president on the organization’s Twitter feed.

“Members from all across the country have sought guidance about transgender women who’ve expressed interest in joining,” Costley Harris said.

“To stay relevant in today’s world, Alpha Chi must be inclusive of all who live and identity as women regardless of their gender assigned at birth.”

And we all know that relevance and inclusivity are all that matters in modern university life — that and decrying any speech that you find offensive, the First Amendment be damned.

Although Alpha Chi Omega sister Melissa Medved believes that the decision was made in response to pressure, she believes it was the right move taken at the right time.

“It pushed Alpha Chi to prove that we are really inclusive and empowering to our women,” she said, according to the Daily. “A transgender woman is just as much of a woman as I am,” she said.

Medved believed that the new policy will have the added benefit of helping dispel the notion that greek organizations are conservatively insular.

“I think it would be really cool for greek life as a whole to accept the people who are identifying as one way or the other,” she said.

Not everyone was as open to the idea as Medved, and clearer heads didn’t hold back with logic and more than a little snark.

Ironically, the Columbia University chapter of Alpha Chi Omega was accused of “insensitivity,” and “transphobia” earlier this month for holding its annual “Walk A Mile In Her Shoes” fundraiser, in which men are challenged to walk around campus in high heels.
