Left-leaning media outlets were salivating at the thought that they had caught President Donald trump in an international scandal on Saturday.
But it was, as many of their stories have been recently, much ado about nothing.
Liberal news website Think Progress reported in December that President Donald Trump might have pressured the Embassy of Kuwait to cancel its Nation Day party and move it to the Trump International Hotel in D.C.
Rumors that were found to be inaccurate when the Middle East nation’s ambassador said they had not spoken to anyone from the Trump team and moved the event because they believed “it would be exciting for our guests to see a new venue.”
The original date of the party was Feb 25 and when the president jettisoned to the hotel for dinner, Judd Legum of Think Progress smelled a story.
Legum deleted the majority of his tweetstorm after he learned the Kuwait party was held on another night and he actually had no story, but he attempted to spin it again to make something of it.
2. In Dec, I reported Kuwait – under political pressure – moved their annual party from 4 Seasons to the Trump Hotel https://t.co/EgSBgvoafn

7. When I was reporting this story a top aide for the Kuwaiti ambassador said he’d invite me to tonight’s event but he never did 🙁

8. From the White House press pool: “The pool is holding in vans and not being allowed inside the [Trump] hotel.”

Uh oh, that has to mean something nefarious is happening, doesn’t it?
Or it might be that he was having dinner with his daughter, son-in-law and friends as The Hill reported.

9. UPDATE: Reuters (https://t.co/8ygv5RUfBT) and NPR (https://t.co/2PYBjEZnhy) reported the Kuwait event tonight. But invite says Wednesday.

11. Going to delete the rest of this thread to avoid spreading misinformation. Kuwait event still an illegal emolument
— Judd Legum (@JuddLegum) February 26, 2017
. . . says Constitutional expert Judd Legum.
But, as the invite said, the Kuwait party was held days earlier and Legum had to attempt to save face somehow.
guys the Kuwait party at @TrumpDC was Wednesday night. I actually have the invite so. Unless there were two, but probs not. @Reuters ? pic.twitter.com/vybBcwmzqn

Critics continue to assert that the president’s ownership of the hotel, located on property leased from the federal government, violates the lease which states that no elected official of the United States “shall be admitted to any share or part of this Lease, or to any benefit that may arise therefrom,” according to The Hill.
House Oversight Committee Chairman Jason Chaffetz told reporters this month that he had requested a copy of the contract.
“I did request from the [Government Services Administration] the full, unredacted contract,” he said. “I requested that the first part of December. I still don’t have it. It will be interesting to see what they produce and what their take on that is. But I don’t have that yet.”
The report from Legum that the president was at the Kuwait event was spread by others in the media, who weren’t happy that they had been duped.
Serves us all right for swallowing Judd Legum bullshit https://t.co/bIYHbzCl57

I saved it for you so you can correct it to the hundreds who already RTd it. I’m just helpful that way. @PhilipRucker pic.twitter.com/3gb9ZlYdgL

It appears both @Reuters & @npr may be in error. Bennett reports Kuwait held its party at @Trump Hotel Wednesday. I’ve retracted my tweet. https://t.co/jWqTqhqACK
