9/11, Pearl Harbor and the election of President Trump: NY Times column comparison steps way over line

New York Times writer Thomas Friedman has taken hyperbole to the extreme by comparing the election of President Trump to horrid American disasters.

Speaking of the resignation of Gen. Michael Flynn as national security adviser amid information that he discussed sanctions with a Russian official before taking office, Friedman compared the president’s election to the terrorist attacks of 9/11 and the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.

“We have never taken seriously from the very beginning Russia hacked our election,” he told the hosts of MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” on Tuesday. “That was a 9/11 scale event. They attacked the core of our democracy. That was a Pearl Harbor scale event.”

The Times writer wondered if the president was involved in it from the beginning.

“The issue is what did he tell Trump? Did he and Trump actually cook up this whole thing after the Russians did not respond harshly to the eviction of their spies and diplomats?” he asked. “Trump actually tweeted out some positive encouragement of this. Did the two of them cook this up all along?”

Friedman’s comparison is so outlandish that even Democrat campaign worker Joe Trippi wasn’t able to defend it when he appeared on Fox News on Tuesday.
