Two senior Democrats attacking former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn became victims of a fake parody account on Twitter.
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Rep. Elijah Cummings referenced tweets from a “fake” Flynn account announcing he was made the scapegoat in the controversy over what he discussed with the Russian ambassador.
“Scapegoat. Do you know what a scapegoat is?” Pelosi asks before launching into the definition for the great unwashed to understand.
Turns out, she’s the one who should have done her homework.

“It’s not scapegoat, it’s stonewalling,” Pelosi said, referring to the tweets from an unverified account on Tuesday.
“The inference to be drawn from [Flynn’s] statement is that other people have blame that should be shared,” Pelosi said, adding a mini-lesson in what a scapegoat actually is, complete with hand gestures.
@cspan @NancyPelosi ??? the Democrats really just held a news conference based on a fake Twitter account. ???

During a press conference just now, Elijah Cummings cited these tweets from a fake Mike Flynn account to bash him. pic.twitter.com/GH7OlPLbsO

The tweet Pelosi claimed she heard about from Cummings, Maryland Democrat and ranking member of the House Government and Oversight Committee, was from a Twitter account bearing no blue checkmark. Flynn’s real account, @GenFlynn, was deleted last month.
While I accept full responsibility for my actions, I feel it is unfair that I have been made the sole scapegoat for what happened. (1/2)

The New York Times and Newsmax Media also apparently quoted from the fake account, with the Times later issuing a correction, The Hill reported.
“Because of an editing error, an earlier version quoted three posts from an unverified Twitter account,” the Times wrote.
The House Oversight Democrats’ Twitter account also noted the error that had been made.
Yes, sorry, to correct the record – just learned like many others that the Flynn tweet this morning was fake. https://t.co/In9XO3r55h

The account in the center of it all followed up with a tweet later Tuesday.
The failing @nytimes, @NancyPelosi & @RepCummings issued statements based on 100% FAKE news. We expect more from our media & politicians!

Pelosi’s dramatic rendering of the information was the source of endless entertainment and countless Twitter face palms.
