This is what democracy looks like!
With a well-documented flair for the dramatic, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi made one last attempt to save an offensive painting depicting police as pigs that was on display at the U.S. Capitol complex.
In an appeal to the House Office Building Commission, which consists of Speaker Paul Ryan, Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, both Republican, and Pelosi, the San Francisco Democrat challenged a decision by the Architect of the Capitol to remove the artwork, according to the Washington Examiner.
Predictably, Pelosi lost what was effectively a futile appeal to herself by a vote of 2 to 1.

Pelosi explained the outcome in a letter to Rep. William Lacy Clay, D-Missouri, who displayed the controversial piece as part of a student art competition in his district.
“I asked the HOBC to agree that removing the painting was wrong and the Architect’s decision should be reversed,” she wrote. “I regret that the majority of the HOBC chose to uphold the Architect’s decision.”
Pelosi noted that the painting was the first to be removed since the competition began in 1982 and said it “dishonors our traditions and violates the First Amendment.”
She didn’t comment on the likelihood the painting may have been the first to openly disrespect law enforcement.
The reaction on social media suggests Pelosi may want to get used to that losing feeling.
Here’s a sampling of responses from Twitter:
@dcexaminer If Pelosi wanted that painting up, a portrait of Kate Steinle should have been placed next to it.
