Prisoners take over and kill one guard, hold several hostages, then claim Trump made them do it

A prison riot in Delaware turned into a hostage crisis with two guards being held by prisoners and along with a list of demands at least one of the hostage takers claimed that the riot was President Donald Trump’s fault.

The Trump claim was made when a group of prisoners called the Wilmington News Journal newspaper on Wednesday to relay their demands.

The paper noted that they spoke to several inmates at the James T. Vaughn Correctional Center in Smyrna, Delaware, and also spoke to some prison employees in several different calls. During one call, an inmate blamed the crisis on President Trump.

“Donald Trump. Everything that he did. All the things that he’s doing now. We know that the institution is going to change for the worse. We know the institution is going to change for the worse,” the inmate reportedly exclaimed.

“We got demands that you need to pay attention to, that you need to listen to,” he continued, “and you need to let them know. I’m talking directly to The News Journal.”

The inmate also complained of mistreatment of inmates by guards and said inmates wanted a better education program for prisoner rehabilitation.

According to The Daily Mail, five prison employees were initially held by prisoners. Authorities also say some inmates inside were likely held against their will by other inmates.

“We are doing everything we can to ensure the safety of everyone involved and using all of our available resources,” Sergeant Richard Bratz of Delaware State Police said during a press conference on Wednesday.

It is thus far unknown just how many prisoners were directly involved in the hostage situation but Sgt. Bratz noted that the facility’s Building C was taken over by inmates.

One officer released by the inmates “had been beaten and bruised and banged up” but is otherwise OK.

“James T. Vaughn Correctional Center is a level 5 prison and is the state’s largest male correctional facility, which houses 2,500 inmates. The facility houses minimum, medium, and maximum security prisoners,” LawNewz.com reported..

By Thursday morning the inmates finally relinquished control and order was restored. One department of corrections employee was killed and a second is now in the hospital.
