Cocky ACLU leader gloats over brief ‘victory’: ‘I hope Trump enjoys losing’

Officials at the American Civil Liberties Union are popping champagne bottles in celebration of the temporary stay a federal judge granted halting the deportation of refugees who had received a valid visa.

But that celebration may be short-lived.

“I hope Trump enjoys losing,” ACLU national political director Faiz Shakir told Yahoo News after the court’s decision.

Then, paraphrasing a statement by Trump that Americans will get tired of winning under his administration, Shakir added, “He’s going to lose so much we’re going to get sick and tired of his losing.”

The ACLU celebrated its victory on social media, gloating that Trump’s loss took place during the first week of his administration.

Although the court’s decision marks the first setback for the Trump administration, it only applies to those refugees and immigrants who have already arrived in or are in transit to the United States after having been granted visas.

At least one person who was detained, an Iraqi who served as a translator for U.S. forces, had nothing but praise for the president and the American people.

Nonetheless, the ACLU continued to gloat.

“Clearly the judge understood the possibility for irreparable harm to hundreds of immigrants and lawful visitors to this country,” ACLU Executive Director Anthony D. Romero said in a statement.

“Our courts today worked as they should as bulwarks against government abuse or unconstitutional policies and orders. On week one, Donald Trump suffered his first loss in court.”

Folks on social media saw right through the ACLU’s celebration and predicted that the president will be the ultimate victor.

U.S. District Judge Ann Marie Donnelly, sitting in Brooklyn, granted the ACLU’s application for the stay, which they filed on behalf of two men who entered the country on valid visas but were detained at the airport because of Trump’s order.
