‘Shocked and awed’: Refugees already detained at US airports are lawyering up, told, ‘call Mr. Trump’

President Trump’s executive order halting refugees and visa holders from some Middle Eastern nation is already making a mark.

Refugees coming into the United States were detained on Friday after the president issued his order, the New York Times reported.

Two of the refugees, being held at New York’s Kennedy Airport, filed a writ of habeas corpus demanding their release, according to the Times.

They also filed a motion for class certification to represent all migrants who they claim are being unlawfully detained.

Another seven refugees, 6 hailing from Iraq and one from Yemen, were prevented from boarding a flight from Cairo, Egypt to America on Friday.

One of the men held at JFK Airport was Khalid Darweesh, who has worked for the United States government in Iraq for 10 years, the Times reported.

Darweesh was released around 1 p.m. Saturday and told reporters he still thinks “America is the greatest nation. The greatest people in the world.”

The other is Haider Sameer Abdulkhaleq Alshawi, who was coming to join his wife, a U.S. contractor, and his child.

“Who is the person we need to talk to?” International Refugee Assistance Project attorney Mark Doss asked, according to the Times.

“Mr. President,” a Customs and Border Protection agent said. “Call Mr. Trump.”

Abed A. Ayoub, of the Arab-American Anti-Discrimination Committee, tweeted about the detentions.

Some on social media think this is the end of America.

But many others were happy that they were starting to see America protected after eight years of feckless border control.
