‘Mad Dog’ comes back swinging! Mattis’ first-day letter to DoD employees is getting some ‘Hell Yes!’

It didn’t take long for newly confirmed Secretary of Defense James Mattis to step into his new role.

The retired Marine general, nicknamed “Mad Dog,” sent a message to employees at the Department of Defense shortly after he was sworn in by Vice President Mike Pence on Friday.

“It’s good to be back and I’m grateful to serve alongside you as Secretary of Defense,” Mattis began.

The  66-year-old retired general acknowledged the Intelligence Community in his message as “sentinels and guardians of our nation,” perhaps easing some of the tension over the last few weeks between them and President Donald Trump.

Mattis continued:

Together with the Intelligence Community we are the sentinels and guardians of our nation. We need only look to you, the uniformed and civilian members of the Department and your families, to see the fundamental unity of our country. You represent an America committed to the common good; an America that is never complacent about defending its freedoms; and an America that remains a steady beacon of hope for all mankind.

Every action we take will be designed to ensure our military is ready to fight today and in the future. Recognizing that no nation is secure without friends, we will work with the State Department to strengthen our alliances. Further, we are devoted to gaining full value from every taxpayer dollar spent on defense, thereby earning the trust of Congress and the American people.

Mattis was confirmed by the Senate after Trump was sworn in on Friday, acting on a signed congressional waiver that granted an exception to a federal law that prohibits U.S. service members to take a position less than seven years after retiring. After 41 years in uniform. Mattis retired from the Marine Corps in 2013.

“I am confident you will do your part. I pledge to you I’ll do my best as your Secretary,” he signed off his letter.

Twitter users wasted no time tweeting out their celebratory messages.
