Trump open to removing Obama Russia sanctions, but only on one condition

In an interview with the Wall Street Journal published Friday, President-elect Donald Trump indicated that he would be open to lifting recently-imposed sanctions on Russia.

The sanctions, including the expulsion of 35 Russian diplomats, were imposed by the Obama Administration in retaliation for alleged Russian hacking of Democratic groups and subsequent leaks that Democrats are partially blaming for Hillary Clinton’s November election loss.

Trump said he will keep the sanctions “at least for a period of time,” but would also be willing to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin soon after assuming office next week.

“I understand that they would like to meet, and that’s absolutely fine with me,” Trump told the WSJ.

On the possibility of meetings and relations going well, Trump asked, “If you get along and if Russia is really helping us, why would anybody have sanctions if somebody’s doing some really great things?”

Although Trump has acknowledged that Russia was the likely hacking culprit, dealing with world leaders, even potentially adversarial ones, is or should be a prerequisite for the highest office in the land.

Thankfully, we have a president-elect who is up to the task.
