Kellyanne Conway’s hubby could be Trump’s next hire; is he right for the job?

President-elect Donald Trump is reportedly considering his senior advisor’s spouse for a role in his administration.

George Conway, the husband of Trump’s top adviser and former campaign manager Kellyanne Conway, could be the next U.S. solicitor general, according to Bloomberg which cited two sources familiar with the matter.

A long-time corporate lawyer, Conway has spent more than two decades as a partner at New York’s Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz, representing high-profile clients like tobacco maker Philip Morris and the National Football League.

Conway was editor of the Yale Law Journal at Yale Law School where he graduated in 1987, according to his biography on the firm’s website.

According to Bloomberg:

He had a minor role in the 1998 impeachment of President Bill Clinton, the husband of Trump’s election opponent, Hillary Clinton. According to an October profile of Kellyanne Conway in the New Yorker, George Conway wrote a Supreme Court brief in the case involving Paula Jones’s sexual harassment suit against Clinton. That opened the path to Clinton’s impeachment on charges of perjury and obstruction of justice. He was acquitted by the Senate.

Unlike previous solicitor generals who have generally had extensive Supreme Court experience, Conway’s biography lists only one Supreme Court case that he has argued, back in 2010.

The U.S. solicitor general represents the government in the Supreme Court and answers ultimately to the president, though decisions are made independently of the White House.

Given Conway’s connection to the administration through his wife, his position as solicitor general could raise some questions.
