Texas congressman: ‘Yes, we will build a wall, put Mexico on a payment plan and enforce the law

A Texas congressman is proposing Mexico be put on a “payment plan” to help fund President-elect Donald Trump’s vision for securing America’s border.

Republican Michael McCaul, who serves as chairman of the House Committee on Homeland Security, believes Mexico and other nations should be held accountable for the “mess” created in the U.S. immigration and border security systems.

“We are going to build the wall. Period,” McCaul wrote in an opinion piece published Friday by Fox News.

“I pledge to stand side-by-side with the Trump administration to throw out Obama’s reckless immigration policies and start enforcing our nation’s laws,” McCaul, who represents Texas’ 10th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives, wrote.

He clarified the term, explaining that the plan includes much more than a wall:

“We are talking about a historic, multi-layered defense system so that drug cartels and terrorists cannot simply slip through the cracks.

This means more border patrol agents, new authorities, aerial surveillance, sensors, and other technology to make sure we seal our territory from illegals for good.

We will take a military-style approach by giving our border and immigration agencies the real command-and-control they need to make it happen.”

But, McCaul noted, Americans can’t be stuck with the bill and Mexico “must have skin in the game” in order to resolve the problems. The payment plan proposal would address these issues.

“There are many reasonable ways to do this,” he explained. “For starters, we can put in place new immigration fees from Mexico, institute a security toll at border crossings, ‘seize and freeze’ drug cartel assets, and more.”

The plan would include other Latin American nations which have “failed to rein in the chaos” in their own countries and would also call on the U.S. to help these nations secure their own borders.

Describing himself as the architect of “extreme vetting,” McCaul promised to overturn President Obama’s failed immigration policies, rescind his unlawful executive actions, and “take sweeping actions to find and deport all criminal aliens in our country.”

McCaul will spell out details of his plans next week at his annual State of Homeland Security Address.

“But for now,” he concluded,  “the American people should know this: your voice was heard, and we are going to work with the Trump administration to shake up Washington and get the job done.”
