Tommy Hilfiger weighs in on designer-slap in the face to Melania Trump and to this country

Fashion designer Tommy Hilfiger criticized colleagues who declared a boycott of Melania Trump, saying they “should be proud to dress” the incoming First Lady.

Hilfiger said politics should play no part in fashion decisions, disagreeing with those like Michelle Obama’s designer who called on others to join her when she announced last week that she would not dress Melania.

“I think Melania is a very beautiful woman and I think any designer should be proud to dress her,” Hilfiger told Women’s Wear Daily while attending the Angel Ball in New York City on Monday.

Hamilton star who lectured Mike Pence has just been dealt the ultimate dose of karma; time to rethink that apology!

“Ivanka is equally as beautiful and smart, although she wears her own clothes,” the 65-year-old American fashion designer continued.  “I don’t think people should become political about it. Everyone was very happy to dress Michelle as well. I think they look great in the clothes. You’re not gonna get much more beautiful than Ivanka or Melania.”

Hilfiger is one of the first designers to speak out following designer Sophie Theallet’s open letter slamming President-elect Trump’s “rhetoric of racism, sexism and xenophobia” as being “incompatible” with her values.

An independent New York store owner reacted to Theallet’s open letter with one of her own, calling the boycott a “slap in the face” and slamming the immigrant designer for insulting the “true democracy of this country,” according to WWD.

“Capitalism is the true mantra of this country; ignorance is not,” boutique owner Angela Guitard wrote in a letter to Theallet whose collection she will no longer carry in her store.

With inauguration ceremonies not too far off, it seems the new First Lady won’t have to worry about securing a show-stopping designer gown.
