Retired Army Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn likens radical Islam to cancer, and considers it to be more of a political ideology than a religion.
And that is the very sort of no-nonsense, tell-it-like-it-is character of the man President-elect Donald Trump chose to be his national security advisor that has conservatives cheering and liberals quaking in their boots.
And after nearly eight years of the current administration, his message is like a breath of fresh air.
“Islam is a political ideology,” he said in an address before the Dallas, Texas chapter of ACT! For America in August. “It definitely hides behind this notion of it being a religion.”
He then compared it to another religion — Christianity.
“I don’t see a lot of people screaming ‘Jesus Christ’ with hatchets or machetes or rifles shooting up clubs or hatcheting, literally axing families on a train,” Flynn told the gathering.
“Or like they just killed a couple of police officers with a machete,” he added. “I mean, it’s unbelievable. So we have a problem.”
And then he called radical Islam for what it was in his opinion.
“It’s like cancer,” he said. “I’ve gone through cancer in my own life. And so it’s like cancer, and it’s like a malignant cancer, though in this case that has metastasized.”
More recently Flynn butted heads with “MSNBC Live’s” Stephanie Ruhle on U.S.-Russian relations.
“You know something, Stephanie, here we just cut a deal,” he said on the November 2 broadcast. “The United States of America just cut a deal with Russia — with Russia’s direct involvement — to give the leading state sponsor of terrorism in Iran a nuclear weapon, to put them on a path to a nuclear weapon.”
Flynn identifies as a Democrat and served under President Obama as director of the Defense Intelligence Agency. He maintains he was fired from that position because the president didn’t want to hear intelligence that clashed with his own world views.
Trump obviously doesn’t have that problem. He’d rather hear the straight dope than some fairy tale.
Lucky for both Flynn and Trump, that national security advisor isn’t a position requiring Senate confirmation.
