Catholic group demands Hillary aide resign over bigoted, faith-bashing email

Reaction from Catholic organizations was swift and critical after WikiLeaks released an email chain Tuesday where a top Clinton aide — communications director Jennifer Palmieri — bashed Catholics in emails with the Center for American Progress’ John Halpin.

They’re now calling for Palmieri’s resignation.

Although Clinton Campaign chairman John Podesta, a practicing Catholic, was included in the email chain, he didn’t respond.

“Friggin’ Murdoch baptized his kids in Jordan where John the Baptist baptized Jesus,” Halpin wrote to Palmieri and Podesta. “Many of the most powerful elements of the conservative movement are all Catholic (many converts) from the SC and think tanks to the media and social groups. It’s an amazing bastardization of the faith. They must be attracted to the systematic thought and severely backwards gender relations and must be totally unaware of Christian democracy.”

“I imagine they think it is the most socially acceptable politically conservative religion,” Palmieri responded. “Their rich friends wouldn’t understand if they became evangelicals.”

The anti-defamation organization Catholic League released a statement condemning the remarks.

“These anti-Catholic remarks are bad enough but it makes one wonder what else Clinton’s chiefs and others associated with the campaign are saying about Catholics and Catholicism,” the group said in its statement.

The conservative group Catholic Vote also responded to the Clinton emails.

“Everyone has a unique faith journey, and it’s just insulting to make blanket statements maligning people’s motives for converting to another faith tradition,” Brian Burch, the group’s president, said in a statement, according to The Hill. “Had Palmieri spoken this way about other groups she would dismissed. Catholics will be watching Hillary Clinton to see whether she thinks our religious faith should be respected, or whether it’s fair game to mock us.”

Family Research Council president Tony Perkins told Fox News host Megyn Kelly during his appearance on “The Kelly File” Tuesday that the emails show the Clinton campaign’s “hostility toward religious freedom,” and warned that “their religious freedom is at stake in this election.”
