After a tumultuous night of sharp blows, the final question in Sunday night’s presidential town hall was to ask each candidate to look past the current rhetoric in the race and “name one positive thing that you respect in one another.”
As difficult as that might appear to be, given the tone of the 2016 election, both candidates handled the question with tact and grace.
First up was Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, who praised rival Donald Trump for the upbringing of his children.
“Look, I respect his children,” she said. “His children are incredibly able and devoted, and I think that says a lot about Donald. I don’t agree with nearly anything else he says or does, but I do respect that.”
The GOP nominee seemed to relish in the compliment, saying he was “very proud” of his children, before returning the favor by saying he respects Clinton because “she’s a fighter.”
“I will say this about Hillary. She doesn’t quit. She doesn’t give up. I respect that,” Trump said. “I tell it like it is. She’s a fighter. I disagree with much of what she’s fighting for. I do disagree with her judgment in many cases. But she does fight hard, and she doesn’t quit, and she doesn’t give up. And I consider that to be a very good trait.”
As warm and cuddly as the candidate’s closing remarks were, somehow it didn’t do much to cut through the lingering smolders from the often bitter attacks earlier in the night.
