Not a race thing: Houston cop resigns after being caught on video brutally beating black man

Not that it gets the same media scrutiny, but sometimes the system works like it’s supposed to when it comes to police brutality and, occasionally, officers involved in these cases do the right thing.

A Houston police officer has resigned after being caught on surveillance footage brutally beating a man who appeared to be sleeping on a train platform, according to ABC affiliate KTRK-TV.

The graphic video shows two officers approaching the African-American man. Officer J. Warren, who is also African-American, can be seen speaking with the man — the video has no sound — and at one point, appears to kick his feet. At this point, the man stands up and Warren unleashes a fierce beating with his baton.

The suspect, Darrell Giles, falls to the ground in pain as Warren continues to strike him. The second officer, who was cleared of any wrongdoing, eventually intervenes.

Chief Vera Bumpers said the officers had a previous encounter with Giles on the platform that same day and that the train operators had asked him to leave.

“They had dealt with him a couple of times earlier that morning asking him to leave the platform and he was combative,” she said.

Warren resigned Monday after an internal review board validated the excessive force allegations against him and recommended his termination, KTRK-TV reported.
