Riots on Giuliani’s watch? No way! Here’s why protesters cannot ‘take the streets’

Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani slammed the riots that engulfed Charlotte this week saying he would not have allowed anything like it on his watch.

“You don’t take the streets,” Giuliani declared Thursday on Fox News Channel’s “Hannity” as a third night of protests unfolded in the North Carolina city.

“Here is my rule. I enforced it with zero tolerance,” he continued. He said protesters had “every right” to speak out but were limited to sidewalks. “You could have the sidewalks, but you couldn’t have the streets unless you got a permit,” he said, explaining that lives could be lost as emergency vehicles would be unable to get through streets that were under siege.

Giuliani, who had a reputation as mayor for being tough on crime, was largely credited for improving the quality of life in New York City and lowering violent crime rates under his leadership which saw the city through the terror attacks of 9/11.

“Yes, you have your right to make your First Amendment point,” Giuliani explained to host Sean Hannity. “But you do not have a right to take away the rights of other people.” He would have wasted no time arresting protesters who were throwing bottles or rocks, the former mayor argued.

“First bottle you throw, I go find you in the crowd” and go right to jail, Giuliani said.

When Hannity asked how we would handle the rioting in Charlotte now that it is already in progress, Giuliani said it should never have even started.

“The first one that got on the streets should have been arrested,” he said, adding that each subsequent rioter should have been arrested until “you wear them down.”
