NCAA drops bomb about relocating championships over bathroom law – GOP responds with verbal nuke

North Carolina’s Republican Party unleashed a rhetorical nuclear bomb at the NCAA Monday night, accusing the organization of not caring about sexual assault and saying that until men’s and women’s sports teams are merged together — locker rooms included — the group has no leeway to wade into the debate over bathroom policies.

The NCAA announced Monday that it would be relocating seven sports championships previously scheduled to take place in the state due to North Carolina’s state law requiring people to use public restrooms aligned to the sex on their birth certificates.

In response, North Carolina GOP spokeswoman Kami Mueller released a defiant statement, obtained by local reporter Andrew Carter, arguing the NCAA’s position logically called for the abolition of all athletic distinctions between men and women.

“This is so absurd it’s almost comical,” Mueller said. “I genuinely look forward to the NCAA merging all men’s and women’s teams together as singular, unified, unisex teams. Under the NCAA’s logic, colleges should make cheerleaders and football players share bathrooms, showers and hotel rooms. This decision is an assault to female athletes across the nation. If you are unwilling to have women’s bathrooms and locker rooms, how do you have a women’s team?”

Mueller didn’t stop there, but instead upped the ante by suggesting the NCAA was ignoring the more pressing issue of sexual assault.

“I wish the NCAA was this concerned about the women who were raped at Baylor,” Mueller continued. “Perhaps the NCAA should stop with their political peacocking — and instead focus their energies on making sure our nation’s collegiate athletes are safe, both on and off the field.”

Mueller’s rhetoric was so intense, Carter emphasized he made sure it wasn’t from a parody account before sharing it.

Amusingly, less than a half hour before the statement was released, Mueller posted a picture of a glass of whiskey to Twitter, though it’s impossible to tell if this had any impact on the statement’s ferocity.
