Hillary Clinton’s running mate claimed that her insulting characterization of millions of Americans doesn’t justify an apology.
During a Friday night rally, the Democratic presidential nominee took a break from insulting Donald Trump to insult his supporters, claiming that half of them fit into a “basket of deplorables.”
Sen. Tim Kaine, the Democratic vice presidential nominee, saw nothing wrong with that statement. According to the Washington Post, he didn’t believe it merited an apology.
“She said, ‘Look, I’m generalizing here, but a lot of his support is coming from this odd place, that he’s given a platform to the alt-right and white nationalists,’” the Virginia Democrat told The Washington Post in a Saturday interview. “But then she [Clinton] went on to say, ‘Look, there’s also a number of his supporters that have economic anxieties, and we’ve got to speak to those.’”
With polls showing that Trump enjoys about 45 percent support, Clinton managed to insult over 22 percent of the country, and Republicans took her to task, beginning with the GOP presidential nominee’s campaign manager.
Kaine claimed that so long as her remarks are “reported fairly that she kind of talked about both halves,” he didn’t believe that they would hurt the Democratic Party’s chances to court Trump supporters.
However, “There are supporters we’re not going to get,” Kaine admitted to The Post.
“I was just seeing this morning there’s some press event in D.C. today by a white nationalist group that’s talking about how they’ve received a higher profile because of the Trump campaign. We’ve seen (former Ku Klux Klan leader) David Duke do robo-calls encouraging people to vote for Donald Trump last week. So there is an odd way in which [Trump’s] campaign has elevated the profile of some of these groups that are very, I think, dangerous.”
Kaine didn’t believe his party needed to “chase after” voters who identify with those groups.
“But Hillary’s comments in full did make clear there are a lot of Trump supporters who have concerns about the economy and other issues that we will definitely need to be responsive to if we get the opportunity to govern,” Kaine said.
On Saturday afternoon, Clinton delivered a half-apology stating that she regretted using the word “half” in her remarks about Trump’s supporters. “That was wrong,” Clinton said.
