A new poll out Friday shows Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump surging in two key swing states.
An Emerson College survey shows Democratic rival Hillary Clinton leading Trump by just one point in Virginia, while the real estate tycoon has a five-point lead in Iowa, according to The Hill.

The online political news source noted that polls from Emerson College tend to show Trump doing better against Clinton than other polls, with some questioning a methodology that relies on landline telephone interviews only.
But pro-Trump Breitbart News sees reason for optimism, saying the results “seem to fit a larger trend over the past two weeks of improving chances for Donald Trump to defeat Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton.”
An Emerson poll in Iowa has Trump up five points over Clinton, 44-39, in a sample of 600 likely voters. This brought the RealClearPolitics average of recent polls in the Hawkeye State to a +1 advantage for Trump, for the first time since the candidates held their respective conventions in mid-July.
Emerson also polled in Virginia and found Clinton with only a one-point lead over Trump, in a sample of 800 likely voters. The resulting RealClearPolitics average of +7.7 for Clinton is a significant departure from recent polls showing her with a double-digit advantage in the Old Dominion, which she has enjoyed since picking Virginia Sen. Tim Kaine (who is also the state’s former governor) as her running mate.
One consistency in both Iowa and Virginia are the unfavorability ratings of the candidates.
The Emerson poll showed that fifty-six percent of Virginia’s voters view Clinton unfavorably, while 60 percent view Trump in a negative light.
Clinton is even further behind in Iowa, with sixty-two percent of voters seeing her as unfavorable, with Trump coming in at 58 percent.
