Hobby Lobby’s CEO David Green endorsed Donald Trump in a USA Today op-ed Thursday, and at the same time blasted his Democratic rival for the White House, Hillary Clinton, for her declaration that religious beliefs “have to be changed.”
Green who had endorsed Marco Rubio for president once said that Trump scared him to death. Today, Green has come to the conclusion that Hillary is the one to be afraid of.
Hobby Lobby successfully challenged the Department of Health and Human Services in a lawsuit that resulted in a landmark Supreme Court decision, holding that for-profit corporations may be exempt from a law that violates its owners’ deeply-held religious beliefs.
Burwell vs. Hobby Lobby sought exemption from those parts of the Affordable Care Act’s contraceptive mandate that forced employers to provide their employees abortion-inducing drugs, such as the controversial “morning-after pill.”
Hobby Lobby is a chain of arts and crafts stores founded by Green and his wife Barbara. He began his piece by noting that religious freedom forms the bedrock of our nation.
“This spirit of freedom began when the pilgrims fled to the New World to practice their faith freely. It continued when America’s founding fathers ratified the Bill of Rights, which begins with the declaration that ‘Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.'”
Green noted the court’s razor-thin 5-4 decision in the Hobby Lobby case.
“It’s frightening to think that we — and all Americans — were just one vote away from losing our religious freedom,” Green said.
Since the court issued that decision, its loudest conservative voice — Justice Antonin Scalia — died, and his seat is still open, waiting to be filled by whichever person succeeds President Obasma in the White House.
“Make no mistake, the vacancy left by Justice Scalia and the subsequent appointment to fill his seat makes this presidential election one of the most significant in modern times,” he said.
Clinton likened the Supreme Court’s Hobby Lobby decision to the practice of Sharia law.
“It is a disturbing trend that you see in a lot of societies that are very unstable, anti-democratic, and frankly prone to extremism,” Clinton said at the Aspen Ideas Festival in Aspen, Colorado. “Where women and women’s bodies are used as the defining and unifying issue … because of their religion, their sect, their tribe, whatever.”
And that’s what Green fears the most about Clinton.
“What I fear she really meant is that the beliefs of people of faith across our nation will be discounted, and those people will be forced to violate their conscience under her presidency — a philosophy that would be carried out by anyone she nominates for the Supreme Court.”
Conversely, Green observed that Trump’s stated list of Supreme Court nominees “inspires confidence that there is hope,” so therefore, “For Americans who value freedom of religion, we must elect a president who will support a Supreme Court that upholds not only this freedom, but all that have emanated from it. That president is Donald Trump.”
Green’s words should be sobering thought the Never Trumpers, and should be considered before the enter the polls November 8.
