The cousin of three-time NBA champion Dwyane Wade was shot dead in Chicago on Friday.
Nykea Aldridge, the mother of four, had just registered her children at a nearby elementary school and was pushing her baby in a stroller with a man when shots rang out, according to the Chicago Tribune — she was “killed by crossfire” and was not the intended target.
The Tribune reported:
Nykea Aldridge, 32, and a man were walking in the 6300 block of South Calumet Avenue about 3:30 p.m. when two men approached and someone began firing at the man, authorities and the family spokesman said.
The woman was hit in the head and the arm and taken to Stroger Hospital, where she died, police said. The baby was not hurt, and a relative came to the scene and took the child, police said.
ABC 7 News reported that the shooting was “gang related.”
Wade, who plays for the Chicago Bulls, was out-of-town when the shooting occurred, but took to Twitter late Friday to post a message.
“My cousin was killed today in Chicago. Another act of senseless gun violence. 4 kids lost their mom for NO REASON. Unreal. #EnoughIsEnough,” the tweet said.

Before relatives have time to grieve, the tragic story is sure to rocket to the top of the liberal agenda, given the close ties Obama has to the NBA and the ironic events that happened the day before.
On Thursday, the NBA superstar, along with his mother, Pastor Jolinda Wade, participated in an ESPN-hosted “national discussion on violence in America,” according to ABC7. The special was filmed at the Southside YMCA, just blocks away from where his cousin would be killed the following day.
“This is something that didn’t start today,” Wade said at the time. “This is something that is not going to end tomorrow. But this is something that we can start a conversation, we can start the work today.”
