Assange suggests DNC staffer suspiciously murdered was WikiLeaks informant; offers $20K for info

WikiLeaks is offering a $20,000 reward for information leading to a conviction in the death of a former Democratic National Committee staffer last month.

Seth Rich was killed July 10 in Washington, D.C., in what police said was possibly a robbery attempt. However, nothing of value was taken from the 27 year-old, except his life — his wallet, watch and cell phone weren’t taken, giving rise to speculations of conspiracy.

WikiLeaks appeared to fan the flames of conspiracy with its offer. The group’s founder, Julian Assange, then added fuel to the fire, seeming to suggest Rich was a WikiLeaks informant.

“Whistleblowers go to significant efforts to get us material and often very significant risks. As a 27 year-old, works for the DNC, was shot in the back, murdered just a few weeks ago for unknown reasons as he was walking down the street in Washington,” Assange said Tuesday on Dutch television program Nieuwsuur.

“That was just a robbery, I believe. Wasn’t it?” the reporter asked.

“No. There’s no finding. So … I’m suggesting that our sources take risks,” Assange responded.

Pressed by the reporter, who tried to clarify the murder insinuation, Assange said the group does not comment on the identity of their sources.

“Then why make the suggestion?” the reporter asked. “It’s quite something to suggest a murder.”

The case remains under investigation. Police told Business Insider there was “no indication” that Rich’s death was connected to his DNC employment.

“However, we welcome information that could potentially lead to the identification of the individual(s) responsible for his death and are pleased when any outside contributors help us generate new leads,” a spokesperson said in a statement.
