President Barack Obama loves to tout the “historic” aspects of his presidency and he hit on more than one landmark Wednesday in commuting the sentences of 214 federal inmates.

Of the 214 inmates affected by Wednesday’s action, 67 were serving life sentences. In Obama’s seven and a half years in office, he has commuted 562 sentences, including 197 life sentences.
Wednesday’s action reflects Obama’s belief that drug dealing is often a nonviolent crime and warrants a lesser punishment than “outdated and unduly harsh sentencing laws” call for, according to White House Counsel Neil Eggleston.
Never mind that more than 50 inmates named were convicted of firearms violations, according to Twitchy.com.
It also marked the fourth time this year Obama has cut drug offenders a break.
The Hill reported the president commuted 61 sentences in March, another 58 in May and 42 more in June.
And expect more to come … lots more.
“Our work is far from finished,” Eggleston wrote in a blog post. “I expect the president will continue to grant clemency in a historic and inspiring fashion.”
While the president’s media allies tout his actions, don’t expect a follow up on how many Americans fall prey to those released.
