‘Operation Hoodsie Cup’: Boston police drop a ‘cool’ $89,000 on an ice cream truck

Ice cream matters.

In an effort to “strengthen ties and build community trust,” the Boston Police Department dropped a cool $89,000 on an ice cream truck.

Part of what is called “Operation Hoodsie Cup,” the new addition to department’s patrol fleet will be used to continue an effort in place since 2010 — an effort that’s handed out around 120,000 free ice cream cups, News 7 Boston reported.

Well, at least the ice cream is free, being donated by HP Hood LLC, a dairy company based in Lynnfield, Massachusetts.

Boston Police Commissioner William Evans said on the BPD website that the goodwill being generated is “nothing short of remarkable.”

“If you had told me 30 years ago that the Boston Police Department would have an ice cream truck as part of its patrol force and my officers would be handing out Hoodsie Cups … I would’ve said you were crazy,” Evans said.

“But, I absolutely love the new truck and everything this program represents,” he added. “The goodwill it generates between my officers and our city’s young people is undeniable and nothing short of remarkable and my only regret is that I wish we had started doing this 30 years ago.”

For what it’s worth, “Hoodsie Cup” is NOT a reference to “the hood,” but is the name of an ice cream treat sold by HP Hood LLC.
