As Hillary Clinton prepared to head into this week’s Democratic National Convention and be nominated as the party’s presidential candidate, her image was dragging behind her.
According to a Gallup poll released Monday, 57 percent of Americans had an unfavorable view of Clinton, the lowest rating in 24 years of her national career.
Clinton’s highest favorable view, 67 percent, was back in December 1998 and, until last year, her lowest favorable ratings were 43 percent in January 1996 and 44 percent in March 2001.
The latest poll shows 38 percent view Clinton favorably, down from 41 percent in mid-June. Americans’ views of Clinton began a downward slide with the launch of her presidential campaign and the scandal surrounding her emails.
In her own party, Clinton was better received with a 71 percent favorable view from Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents.
Republican nominee Donald Trump scored a 36 percent favorable and 59 percent unfavorable rating, according to the same Gallup poll, indicating the 2016 presidential race is being waged by two highly unpopular candidates. Clinton will have to work hard to restore her popularity as she steps into the role of Democratic nominee with an image at its very lowest.
