Despite their parents dueling over the most prestigious job in the world, Ivanka Trump and Chelsea Clinton have remained committed friends.
“We are [friendly],” Trump told PEOPLE. “There’s certainly tremendous intensity around both of our lives right now.”
Imagine your dad and your friend’s mom had an argument, now multiply that by about a million and that’s what the two are dealing with.
The two became friends when their parents were much friendlier to each other. Something the Republican nominee said was only in the interest of business.

“No we’re really not [friendly anymore],” Donald Trump told PEOPLE as he closed in on winning the GOP nomination. “I was friendly with her when I was a business person because it was to my advantage to be friendly. When you are in business you have to be friendly with everybody. Republican, Democrat, Secretary of State. But no I haven’t spoken to her in a long time.”
But their daughters’ friendship is more sincere.
“We’re both incredibly supportive of our parents, as we should be,” Ivanka told PEOPLE. “But we also continue to have great respect for one another.”
It’s a sentiment that Clinton agreed with when she spoke to PEOPLE last fall.
“Friendship is always more important than politics. I learned that growing up, watching my parents be friends with people across the political spectrum in Arkansas,” she said.
The pair hasn’t seen each other since they both welcomed new babies but they don’t anticipate that the election will affect their friendship.
“Our friendship has never been about politics,” Ivanka said. “I don’t expect it will be about politics in the future.”
