Obama’s ex-campaign manager in total denial, says GOP once had a shot to win, if only…

It’s all Trump’s fault — of course.

After watching the Republican National Convention one of Obama’s top campaign managers has proclaimed Hillary Clinton a “99 percent chance favorite to win” in November even though he feels Clinton could easily lose if the right GOP candidate was facing her.

“This was a winnable race for the right Republican candidate,” David Plouffe told Politico on the GOP convention’s final day.

Plouffe’s analysis, though, was incredibly rosy for Hillary, the candidate he is working for. The former Obama adviser predicted that Donald Trump will get less than 200 electoral votes and Hillary will win in a landslide.

“This is going to sound crazy but I think she’s like a 99 percent chance favorite to win,” Plouffe said. “I don’t think that Trump wins any of the states that Romney lost … Clinton’s actually going to have a field-goal unit. Trump has no field-goal unit. Clinton could do [one to three points] better in some states, just based on running a more sophisticated and smart campaign.”

While Plouffe is dour on Trump, he did think that a better GOP candidate could easily have beaten Hillary.

“This was a winnable race for the right Republican candidate,” the current Hillary operative said. “So I think that’s probably why people here in Cleveland, some of them are so downcast. Is they know this was a race that — well, certainly should’ve been very competitive, but it could’ve been winnable … But that’s what I think is tragic if you’re a Republican … you know, maybe you still would’ve lost, but it would’ve been close … you had a chance to win.”

Plouffe did think that team Hillary will have a whale of a problem figuring out how to prepare to confront Trump’s erratic style, especially for the debates.

“I think preparing for Trump will be hard because you have to prepare for crazy Trump and statesmen-like Trump, and attacking Trump, and counter-punching Trump. So I do not envy their preparation,” he said.

Still, whatever happens in the next few months, Plouffe predicted that Trump won’t win any of the battleground states. In fact, Plouffe amazingly thinks Hillary will outperform Obama’s election numbers saying, “Hillary could outperform Obama in some states. I think [in] Florida she can do better than we did.”

But with all that Plouffe puffery for Hillary, many on social media felt coverage of his comments was absurd.

When The Hill reported the story, several Twitter users slammed the lack of a balanced treatment of Trump.

And on the other hand, some Democrats feel panicked that Trump won the GOP nomination…

Finally, despite Politico and David Plouffe’s dismissal of Trump, many Republicans were quite jazzed by the convention.

And of course, Plouffe’s statements came before the CNN polls that were taken after Trump’s speech. Those polls sang a whole different tune.
