“I humbly and gratefully accept your nomination for the Presidency of the United States.”
Donald Trump chose the perfect time and the biggest stage to deliver what was by far the most eloquent, detailed, and devastatingly on-point speech of his short political career.
In the hour and 15 minute speech, Trump laid out his vision for America and the stark contrast it presents with the status quo offered by the Democrats.
He began by drawing from current events to focus on the return to law Americans so desperately want.
“We will be a country of generosity and warmth, but we will also be a country of law and order. The attacks on police and the terrorism on our cities threaten our way of life. Any politician who does not grasp this danger is not fit to lead our country. I have a message for all of you, the crime and violence that today afflicts our nation will soon, and I mean very soon, come to an end.”
“Beginning on Jan 20, 2017, safety will be restored,” Trump continued. “The most basic duty of government is to defend the lives of its own citizens. Any government that fails to do so is a government unworthy to lead.”
Promising to, in contrast to the Democrats, “honor the American people with the truth,” Trump criticized the current Administration’s rollback of criminal enforcement resulting in a rash of homicides and violent crimes in cities all over the country, particularly Chicago where 4,000 have been killed since Obama took office.
“An attack on law enforcement is an attack on all Americans,” Trump said to thunderous applause.
On Clinton’s time as Secretary of State, Trump said, “America is far less safe and the world is far less stable than when Obama made the decision to put Hillary Clinton in charge of America’s foreign policy.”
He hammered her “bad instincts and her bad judgement,” saying as a result “ISIS has spread across the region and the entire world. Libya is in ruins and our ambassador and his staff was left to die. Egypt and Iraq Iran Syria civil war, refugee crisis. After 15 years of wars in the Middle East, after trillions of dollars spent, after thousands of lives lost, the situation in Middle East is worse than ever. Death, destruction, terrorism, and weakness – the legacy of Hillary Clinton.”
“A change in leadership is required to produce a change in outcomes.”
Donald Trump’s plan of action?
“The difference between our plan and that of our opponent is that our plan will put America first! Americanism not globalism will be our credo.”
Speaking to the people who have been “ignored, neglected, and abandoned,” the factory workers crushed by trade deals, “these are the forgotten men and women of our country,” Trump promised they “are not going to be forgotten long. To those who work hard and no longer have a voice, I am your voice.”
“I have joined the political arena so that the powerful can no longer beat up on people who cannot defend themselves.”
Calling Hillary Clinton a “puppet of special interests,” Trump hammered her for everything from Benghazi to the State Department email scandal, saying, “I know that corruption has reached a level like never ever before in our country.”
Trump made efforts to appeal to constituencies who might not traditionally vote Republican – Bernie Sanders supporters by fixing their “biggest single issue,” bad trade deals, and to the LGBTQ community by protecting them from the “violent and foreign and hateful ideology” that seeks to come here in ever greater numbers.
The nominee laid out three key ways to protect Americans from terrorism – 1.) improved intelligence gathering 2.) abandoning the “failed policy of nation building and regime change” that Clinton pushed in Iraq, Libya, Egypt, and Syria to markedly devastating results, and, 3.) dealing with immigration.
On immigration, Trump was loud and clear:
“We must immediately suspend immigration from any nation that has been compromised by terrorism until such a time as proven vetting mechanisms have been put into place. We don’t want them in our country! My opponent has called for a radical 500% increase … in Syrian refugees on top of the existing massive refugee flows coming into our country already under the leadership of President Obama. She proposes this despite the fact that there is no way to screen these refugees in order to find out who they are or where they come from. I only want to admit individuals into our country who will support our values and love our people. Anyone who endorses violence, hatred, or oppression is not welcome in our country and never ever will be. Decades of record immigration have produced lower wages and higher unemployment for our citizens, especially for African- American and Latino workers. We are going to have an immigration system that works for the American people.”
In a show of solidarity for a constituency Democrats certainly aren’t seeking, the families of those murdered by illegal aliens, Trump said, “These wounded American families have been alone, but they are not alone any longer. Tonight, this candidate and the whole nation stand in their corner to support them to send them our love and to pledge in their honor that we will save countless more families from the suffering and the same awful fate. We are going to build a great border wall to stop illegal immigration, to stop the gangs and the violence and to stop the drugs from pouring into our communities.”
“On January 20, 2017, the day I take the oath of office, Americans will finally wake up in a country where the laws of the United State are enforced. We are going to be considerate and compassionate to everyone, but my greatest compassion will be for our own struggling citizens.”
Appealing to rust-belt states like Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Michigan, Trump reiterated his long-time stance on trade and the devastating effects on American jobs, saying we need a “new fair trade policy that protects our jobs and stands up to countries that cheat, of which there are many.”
“I pledge to never sign any trade deal that hurts our workers or that diminishes our freedom and independence … American first again … America first.”
Trump hammered China for their known theft of intellectual property, illegal dumping, and currency manipulation, and expressed a willingness to renegotiate and even walk away from NAFTA if necessary. “Our country is going to start building and making things again.”
On taxes, Trump proposed massive reform of tax laws, regulations, and energy rules. “IÂ have proposed the largest tax reduction of any candidate that has run for office this year – Democrat or Republican.”
“We are going to lift the restrictions on the production of American energy. This will produce more than 20 trillion dollars in economic activity over the next four decades.”
Trump also gave nods to the second amendment, school choice, religious liberty, free speech, taking care of veterans, eliminating wasteful spending, repealing “disastrous Obamacare,” fixing the “TSA at the airports, which is a total disaster,” and appointing justices to the Supreme Court “who will respect our laws and uphold our Constitution.”
In a moment of candid humility, Trump expressed sincere gratitude for the evangelical support without which he couldn’t have won, even though “I’m not sure I totally deserve it.”
“It is time to show the whole world that America is back, bigger and better and stronger than ever before …Â I will be your champion.”
Finally, in perhaps the most symbolic yet powerful contrast between himself and his opponent, Trump compared Hillary’s “I’m with her” slogan with his “different pledge…”
“I’m with you, the American people.”
