Ultimate Fighting Championship president Dana White seemed like an unlikely speaker to address delegates at the Republican National Convention.
But the fight promoter offered up a resounding endorsement for GOP nominee Donald Trump, whom he called a “loyal friend,” opening his remarks with a loud “What’s up GOP?”
Video from Fox 10 Phoenix.
White recalled his early days with the UFC and how Trump supported the mixed martial arts organization, hosting early fights at his venues when no one else would.
“State athletic commissions didn’t support us, arenas around the world refused to host our events. Nobody took us seriously,” White said. ” Nobody,  except Donald Trump. Donald was the first guy to recognize the potential we saw in the UFC and encouraged us to build our business,”
“I will always be grateful, so grateful to him for standing with us in those early days,” White said. “So tonight I stand with Donald Trump.”
White detailed qualities in Trump that he respected, praising him for his “great business instincts” and the fact that he is “a hard worker.” He then expounded on the bond of friendship between them.
“For over 15 years, Donald Trump has been a loyal and supportive friend,” White said, giving examples of Trump’s unselfish encouragement over the years.
“I’ve been in the fight business my whole life,” White concluded. “I know fighters. Ladies and gentlemen, Donald Trump is a fighter and I know he will fight for this country.”
