Baton Rouge police officer Montrell Jackson, who happens to be black, was among three officers murdered in the line of duty Sunday.

This recent spate of violence that has swept the nation actually began almost two weeks ago in the same city where Jason was murdered when two white police officers shot and killed Alton Sterling in a Baton Rouge parking lot, and has now tragically come full circle.

Two weeks ago, after black militant Micah Johnson shot and killed five white officers in Dallas, Jackson penned a moving Facebook post about what it was like to be a black police officer.

“I’m tired physically and emotionally,” Jackson wrote. “Disappointed in some family, friends, and officers for some reckless comments but hey what’s in your heart is in your heart. I still love you because hate takes too much energy but I definitely won’t be looking at you the same.”

“I swear to God I love this city but I wonder if this city loves me. In uniform I get nasty hateful looks and out of uniform some consider me a threat,” he continued. “I’ve experienced so much in my short life and the past 3 days have tested me to the core.”

Still hopeful, Jackson pleaded, “Please don’t let hate infect your heart. This city MUST and WILL get better. I’m working in these streets so any protesters, officers, friends, family, or whoever, if you see me and need a hug or want to say a prayer I got you.”

Kristi Godal took a screenshot of the post, which wasn’t public:

Jason had been on the force for a decade and was survived by his wife and their 4-month-old son, Mason.

A true hero, in 2007 The Advocate reported how Jason ran into a burning building to try to save a toddler. “Jackson and other officers tried to reach the toddler using fire extinguishers, but there wasn’t enough time. The police were driven back by flames, and when medics arrived they had to treat the officers, including Jackson, for smoke inhalation.”
