If the rumors are confirmed, Donald Trump may be signaling a shift in his thoughts for a vice presidential choice — away from the political and with a new emphasis on the military.
At present, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee’s short list included former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie.
The Washington Post, however, indicated that Trump has once-again thrown reporters a “curve ball,” this time in the form of a retired Army General who is not a Republican Party member.
The Post reported:
After weeks of focusing on a group of current and former elected officials in his search for a running mate, Donald Trump is increasingly intrigued by the idea of tapping retired Lt. Gen. Michael T. Flynn to project strength and know-how on national security, according to four people familiar with the vetting process.
Flynn, a registered Democrat but fierce critic of President Obama, previously ran the Defense Intelligence Agency.
The turn toward a military figure is being driven by Trump himself rather than by his advisers, the people said, and comes as the real estate mogul is telling his friends that national unrest may demand a “tough and steady” presence alongside him on the ticket.
By its use of the plural “sources,” The Post indicated that they used more than one source, and that they revealed their information only on the condition of anonymity.
Although Flynn is a Democrat who headed up the Defense Intelligence Agency under President Barack Obama, that doesn’t mean that he has been Obama’s mouthpiece. On the contrary, he’s often been seen as one of the administration’s loudest critics.

Because of his clashes with administration officials, Flynn was forced out of his DIA post in 2014.
In the wake of the Islamic State’s bombing of the Istanbul, Turkey airport that left 42 people dead, Trump vowed to make the defeat of the terrorist group one of his priorities.
“We have to give them a big, fat, ugly defeat,” he said. “We have to defeat them fast.”
And Flynn indicated that he knows just how to do it — he wrote a book on the subject.

Trump has said before that he’s open to a Democrat to serve as his vice president. Flynn could be just the ticket he needs to win in November and succeed in the ultimate goal of defeating radical Islam.
