Rep. Will Hurd, who is a former CIA agent, excoriated Democratic members of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee who claimed its questioning of FBI Director James Comey amounted to political theater.
The Texas Republican also took on Comey.
“Mr. Chairman, I’m offended. I’m offended by my friends on the other side of the political aisle saying this is political theater. This is not political theater. For me, this is serious,” the Texas Republican began.
Given his experience working undercover in the field, Hurd was shocked by the cavalier manner in which Hillary Clinton sent, received and handled sensitive information through an unsecured email server located in the basement of her private home.
“I spent nine-and-a-half years as an undercover officer in the CIA. I was the guy in the back alleys collecting intelligence, passing it to lawmakers. I’ve seen my friends killed, I’ve seen assets put themselves in harm’s way, and this is about protecting information. The most sensitive information the American government has, and I wish my colleagues would take this a little bit more seriously.”
With that out of the way, Hurd turned his attention to Comey.
Hurd asked if the classified data that Clinton sent and received on her private server included HUMINT (human intelligence, i.e. that gathered by agents in the field) and SIGINT (signals intelligence, i.e. that gathered by the interception of electronic signals).
Comey replied that both types of information were stored on Clinton’s server.
“So, the former secretary of state has an unauthorized server — those are your words — in her basement. Correct?”
When Comey answered in the affirmative, Hurd asked, “Who was protecting that information; who was protecting that server.”
“Well, not much,” the FBI director said. “There was a number of different people who were assigned as administrators of the server.”
“And at least seven email chains — or eight — was classified as TS/SCI (top secret, sensitive compartmented information).”
“Correct,” Comey answered.
“Correct,” Comey answered.
“So the former secretary of state, one of the president’s most important advisors on foreign policy and national security [kept] a server in her basement that had information that was collected from our most sensitive assets and it wads not protected by anyone and that’s not a crime,” Hurd asked in disbelief.
“That’s outrageous!”
