Donald Trump called Tuesday’s FBI announcement “shocking to legal scholars.”
The presumptive Republican presidential candidate questioned the timing of meetings and speeches over the Fourth of July holiday and found FBI Director James Comey’s determination that Clinton not be indicted “surprising.”
After listing all of Clinton’s mistakes, Comey made it sound like “there was no choice but to convict” or have some “form of very harsh punishment,” Trump said in a phone interview on Fox News’ “The O’Reilly Factor” on Tuesday.
“And they didn’t do that,” Trump said, “and I can tell you everybody was stunned at the end, because, you know if you listen to it, it sounds like she had horrible judgment. She didn’t know what she was doing. She was sloppy. She was just about as bad as you can be.”
Trump did not understand the FBI recommendation to not bring charges against the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee as “everybody knows she’s extremely guilty.” He believed that Clinton’s intent is based on the fact that she knew what she was doing as secretary of state.
“She’s a lawyer. She knew what was going on,” Trump said. “Whether you had intent or not is not the defining characteristic of this. You can make a mistake and you’re still guilty, because you’re talking about national security, and there are a lot of reasons for guilt. So it’s very, very surprising.”
Trump concluded that the events of the last few days represent a “total miscarriage in justice.”
“I believe that what happened is shocking. And it’s shocking to legal scholars,” he said.
