A Baton Rouge, Louisiana woman who beat her three sons after discovering that they’d broken into a neighbor’s home learned Friday that she won’t facing charges.
Schaquana Spears, 30, was arrested last month on two felony counts of cruelty to a juvenile when her children and some of their friends returned home with items stolen from a neighbor’s.
A sheriff’s report from her June 20 arrest indicated that the beatings had broken the skin of her 11-year old and 13-year-old, leading to the charges. Although a thirds son, age 10, was also beaten, it didn’t result in bleeding.
Sparks was facing up to 20 years in prison if found guilty on the original charges.
The prosecuting attorney thought of what his own parents would have done under similar circumstances and dropped the charges.
“My intent is to not prosecute. I doubt that I’ll change my mind. I don’t think there’s evidence there to help me change my mind,” East Baton Rouge Parish District Attorney Hillar Moore III told CBS affiliate WAFB.
After her arrest, Spears found herself at the center of a media storm of supporters who’d thought he did the right thing.
“Sparing the rod leads to an imprisoned child,” said Louisiana State Treasurer John Kennedy, who echoed the thoughts of many others championing her cause.
“It was perfectly justified, reasonable discipline of her children,” her lawyer, Bently Craig said. He added that her actions never rose “to the level of what you could call abuse or any criminal behavior.”
