The U.S. Air Force is buckling the trend of bowing down to political correctness. Instead of removing the word “man” from ranks and titles, they’re keeping the designator in — an airman will remain an airman, no matter what the sex of the person.
Navy Secretary Ray Mabus referred to Defense Secretary Ash Carter’s directive that women could apply for a full range of military jobs as “an opportunity to update the position titles,” and got to work revising them.
Although the Air Force is opening all job categories to women, it’s nixing the idea of changing the job designations and is sticking to tradition, according to Stars and Stripes.
“I think the term ‘airman’ needs to stay how it is. It’s who we are. It’s part of our heritage,” Senior Master Sgt. Andrea Cook told Stars and Stripes. “I’ve been an airman for 21 years.”
She has no intention of becoming an “airperson,” and her sisters in arms are in full agreement.
“It should be left as it is now; it’s part of our tradition,” said Chief Master Sgt. Erika Schofield, 42, based at Ramstein. “Using ‘man’ in our titles isn’t gender-specific in our career fields.”
Senior Airman Julia Liggio said she didn’t think being called an “airman” was a “big deal.”
“I’ve been called an airman my entire enlistment, and it’s never bothered me in any way,” she said.
The U.S. Marine Corps, however, announced earlier this week that they’re replacing the word “man” in 19 job titles — in most instances with the word, “Marine.”
A female airman at Ramstein, who didn’t wish to be named, had a one-word description for the thinking that went into that decision.
“Dumb is the only way I can describe it,” she told Stars and Stripes. “Don’t they have anything smarter to do with their time?”
