Just days after Britain voted to exit the European Union, plans have emerged to create one giant superstate, morphing all the EU nations into one.
Foreign ministers from France and Germany revealed a blueprint that proposes to do away with individual member states’ armies, criminal law systems and central banks, according to Express. All of these powers would be transferred to Brussels in the radical plan that would also diminish member states’ control over their own borders.
The plan, leaked to Polish news channel TVP Info, has sparked fury and panic in Poland, and is being blasted by Polish foreign minister Witold Waszczykowski, Express reported.
“The mood in European societies is different. Europe and our voters do not want to give the Union over into the hands of technocrats,” he said. “Therefore, I want to talk about this, whether this really is the right recipe right now in the context of a Brexit.”
In a foreword to the nine-page report, Foreign Ministers Frank-Walter Steinmeier of Germany and Jean-Marc Ayrault of France said, “Our countries share a common destiny and a common set of values…that give rise to an even closer union between our citizens. We will therefore strive for a political union in Europe and invite the next Europeans to participate in this venture.”
Though some see the Brexit vote as clearing the way for a United States of Europe, others are not so sure. Lorenzo Condign, the former director general of Italy’s treasury, is not optimistic about a united Europe at this time.
“It seems difficult to imagine that the rest of the EU will close ranks and move in the direction of greater integration quickly. Simply, there is no political will,” he said.
The idea of a single European army was one of the reasons for Brexit, and EU chiefs have been more aggressive in their push for its creation, according to The Sun.
“We, as Europeans, need to take on a greater responsibility for our own security,” Europe’s chief diplomat said in a document titled “EU Global Strategy on Foreign and Security Policy.”
“We need to be ready and able to repel, respond and to protect ourselves against aggression, provocations and destabilization.”
It seems Britain just dodged a bullet with its vote to leave the EU.
